The Toyota Highlander only offers drivers two different powertrains. A 265-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while there's also a 2.5-liter four-cylinder combined with two electric motors. With just two powertrains, there's not much room for extra performance like the 2023 Ford Explorer provides, especially if you want to explore more rugged terrain.
Interior Comfort
Function and comfort are the two most important interior factors a driver can look for. The front two rows of the Explorer offer ample space for children and adults alike, while the third row is great for a younger audience. Every seat is comfortable, and the controls are easy to use.
The Toyota Highlander also has a comfortable interior design. There's generous space in the first two rows, and the available captain's chairs make a nice addition. Even though passengers will have a solid amount of space, it's still less than what the Ford Explorer provides.
